Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
