The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team could be designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
