Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
