People who experienced sexual abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope following their first meeting with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's decision to meet with them so soon in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The organization is advocating for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor. This policy has been implemented in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in spring, has inherited this persistent problem that has plagued the Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the situation included an historic meeting on child abuse within the Church and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who prefers they/them pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the measure is deeply meaningful. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was later transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to collaborate with him," they stated. "Both sides share the common objective, we want to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Historic Meeting

Seven representatives of the coalition, which includes victims and advocates from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a female survivor victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

Hickey added the Pope was "tender" about their own story and appeared "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The organization is hoping that revisions to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have spoken with specialists and gathered documents that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in looking at it," Hickey noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned document emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they told the pontiff at the beginning of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the meeting, Hickey voiced hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and building a connection and persisting to build that bond is a move in the correct path," they commented.

They added that they shared with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the story concludes - he appreciated that."
